L'Alliance Française de Détroit opened in 1902 as one of the precusor cities in the United States to the Alliance Française, which was originally founded in Paris in 1883 by a group including Louis Pasteur, Ferdinand de Lesseps and Jules Verne.

In 1980, the French Institute of Michigan was the first Alliance Française chapter in Michigan offering French classes.

The current Alliance Française de Détroit / French Institute of Michigan (AFD/FIM),is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the French language and culture in Michigan and we have been sharing our passion for more than 120 years.

To passionately share the French culture and language as an ongoing celebration that keeps the culture alive and promotes friendship among people of our communities.

To live in a world redefined by embracing cultural diversity in a way that inspires, influences, provokes and changes the way we think and act.

The AFD/FIM is a nonprofit 501(c)3, cultural and educational association and is, in the U.S., a Chapter of the Alliance Française.

For more than a century, an ever-increasing number of students of all origins visit the Alliances Françaises. This continued patronage and vitality are mainly due to the ties woven with citizens and sponsors of host countries.

The Alliance Française de Détroit / French Institute of Michigan is proud to be part of the world’s largest network of French language schools and cultural centers. A network with over 830 independently run committees established in 133 countries teaching over 550,000 students. The Fondation Alliance Française, based in France, www.fondation-alliancefr.org, is the moral and legal reference of Alliances Françaises.

The Alliance Française de Détroit / French Institute of Michigan is also part of the Federation des Alliances Françaises USA, a nonprofit organization which supports its members to fulfill their mission. www.afusa.org.
